Transom lettering question

Hi,

I have my refinished transom on about coat 5 of maybe 10 coats of varnish. I want to apply a name- what’s the best material and should it be done and varnished over or no? Thanks!!! 1956 Islander

I have a good friend who would letter now and then finish coating to seal the lettering and In his case make it all nice and smooth. Blend in flush.

Yikes, How did I miss this, depending on your end product look, You can paint it on and throw a coat over it, Or not. The advantage of having coats over the lettering is it allows you to refresh the varnish without having to letter again. WITH THAT SAID, if you go vinal lettering, who cares. BUT, go gold leaf or a leaf, you want several coats over it to be protected. NOTE, Gold gets golder and Alum, gets a tad warmer, and SILVER, goes green because it will tarnish. If it were me, I would gold leaf that sucker and have a person that has some style to do it. Depending on where you live, there are hand sign guys out there.
