I’m in need of a stain able wood putty filler that will work with Lockwood brand water based stain. I’ve tried three different brands and also made my own. What I’m trying to accomplish is filling in and staining a very thin seam between planks. These planks were all epoxied in place and some whiteish epoxy shows. I’m scraping it out with dental picks first, then filling in with the putty. Sanding to 180 grit, then staining again. Most of the putty still shows lighter in color then desired.
Well thats a job from hell! HA. Can you post pics? I have tried all sorts of tricks. Stain mixing, and applying with small brush. Paint, yup, and kinda wood grain it if need be. And there is the use wood stain color and paint a seam line over it. thats why a pic would help explain the situation
You might try Durham’s Water Putty.
Famo wood. West Marine, Home Depo, there is a stainable type called “natural” or something like that. Stain after it dries.
I’ve tried Famowood, , Elmers walnut wood paste, Timber Mate water based and blending the stain powder in one shot of epoxy with a teaspoon of Colloidal Silica and the red stain powder. No results that I like yet. Painting has been suggested. Don’t like the idea.
Post a photo of the situation.
I hope these photos help. I contacted the stain manufacture and they have suggested a wood filler that I ordered today and will post my results when done trying it.
Photos posted! Thanks
You can use milk paint which comes as a powder to color the epoxy to the tint you want.
Thanks for the tip!
Is the plan to have the seams disapear? Or are you going to highlite them in White or a color?
No highlight. Just a nice uniform blend. 99,5% of the seams blend and look good. Only where the epoxy squeezed out and hardened is there a problem. The epoxy will not take the stain and looks lighter and obvious like in this photo.
I am gonna stick with my original solution. A series of mixed stain and possible paint. You may need to do that is stages. A little in each coat. This is the area of where art takes over. Its kinda what ever works. And since its already coated in a finish, then the argument of sanding and so on is already mute.
Well I know the photo was still in 205/207 West Epoxy it’s all sanded off. Bare naked wood now. I was shocked as to how hard the epoxy applied in 2021 was. It took a lot of work to sand it all off. Today is the big day to see if the newly tried wood putty with a touch of stain powder works. Mixed and applied it Friday afternoon. Took an all day cruise to my son’s new home and color tour Saturday. Should be dried through out now. Will submit some before and after photos later today if I can.
I’m still not happy with these results. Putty is a water base and some wiped out and left a davit
when staining.
Thats actually not bad. After serearal coats of varnish it will blend in. But if you want to, the reall issue is the grain stopping, some light dark issues. YOU COULD, take a darker stain and kinda wood grain with a small brush to trick the eye. This is a VERY common trick in all sorts of wood working.
Understood. I like that idea and think I’ll give it a try.
