Shop lighting types and locations

Art kinda touched on this in one of his replies to a related topic, but I am upgrading my shop lighting and need guidance. I am basically starting over from scratch. The area is roughly 16X24 and 8’ tall(I know it is a bit small, but all I got). Any suggestions as to spacing and types of lights would be greatly appreciated!

Several years ago, I was able to add a 13x40 shop/garage to the side of my existing 2-car garage. The lighting I installed was 6 double tube 4’ LED shop lights from Costco mounted on the ceiling. They are pretty adequate for “almost” all work. I do use a high intensity light when varnishing the topsides.

Thank you Russ! So in my case of a 24’ length, should 4 of those lights be adequate? What are you using for your high intensity lighting?

I am sure there is a possibility of TOO MUCH LIGHT but would opt on that side rather than too little. Might go with 5 or 6 of the LED shop lights and put the array on a dimmer if too bright for all work. Your square footage is about 80% of mine, so 5 fixtures as a minimum. My “extra” light is just an older floor mount high intensity flood light from my days as a contractor. It gets REALLY hot!

Thanks Russ! I was thinking perhaps two lights on each side of the ceiling and two more down the middle of the ceiling, the 3 two light banks being on separate switches. I wonder if I mounted some on the walls horizontally if that wood help with hull sides. The floor light would be nice during MI winters!

Thanks Russ. I am “playing around” with temporary mounts. I do plan on separate circuits for the different light banks to put light where I want it and to save energy not lighting space that does not need lighting. The horizontal wall lighting is something I think I will try. I have seen it in some boat shop photos. It must work. Thanks again!
