HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? Water pump sploads!

Okay since no one is needing any advice these days. I am gonna ask this, cause we are very confused. Jimmys water pump on a newer Mercruiser engine, just broke in half. Plastic yes. But the impeller is still good, and Bam! How does this even happen?

looking at impeller looks like overheating

How old was the impeller? Bought a new Sherwood pump for a CC 283 and the impellers failed after 5 engine hours. The pump was probably sitting on the shelf for quite some time. Neoprene impellers are reliable for 3 to 4 seasons in fresh water. After that you are taking a chance.

Not a new pump, but the impeller felt like new, no breaks, rubbery, and all. Seems like the pump broke, and then it pumped water in the hull, then heated up fast.

Could simply be defective.

Fits in the category of S**T happens!

Over tightening of the housing bolts.
The plastic housing aged out.
Just replacing the impeller and not the housing. Mercruiser sells a kit for that pump and not just an impeller. As the housing is a wear item just like the impeller.
Also if the fingers have taken a set which those have. Its worn out.

Thanks Jim, this makes complete sense
