I have been a wood boat nut for 40 years now. My wife Deb live near Port Clinton, Ohio on a canal system with an 80ft dock in our back yard. We raised 6 children, all grew up having fun every weekend on wood cruisers of one brand or another. Myself, growing up near Lake Erie, my father had a wood runabout and a wood cruiser. Then he purchasing a brand new 1969 Chris Craft 17ft fiberglass ski boat (the red one) when I was 9 years old. I vividly remember him cursing the thing because it didn’t ride like a wood boat and he hated that he gave up his beautiful wood boat for fiberglass. He died later that year, but the memory has been with me my whole life. When I reached adulthood, I had to have a wood boat…no fiberglass. I have owned and maintained and restored many old wood boats during the last 40 years, ranging from a 1953 17ft CC sportsman to 1968 45ft Matthews. My current project is a 1953 CC 19ft Holiday. I have mellowed as I’ve gotten older and sold my last wood cruiser and acquired a 33ft CC fiberglass boat. I also have a 22ft Searay center console outboard for just bombing around. I dream of the day that I can finish the Holiday and once again be back enjoying a wood boat.
